The Phirst Sentence Short Story Contest                      |                                       ARTiculate Contest

The Phirst Sentence Short Story Contest

A writing prompt taken to another level.

Stories will begin with the first sentence provided. This sentence should not be altered in any way unless directed by the editor.

This piece should entice us, surprise us, make us laugh, make us cry, make us feel. We are honored to be a part of your story by providing you with the first line so honor us by making it gratifying, original, and extraordinary. Fiction, creative non-fiction, flash fiction, the genre doesn't matter, but the story? The story does. Make it a story worth telling.

Please do not submit stories starting with our first sentence to other journals or post them on public sites until we notify you with a decision. We do not want to look as if we stole our first sentence from another writer or publication so please refrain from submitting the piece you write for this contest elsewhere. After notification, feel free to submit to other journals. Questions? Email us at phreewritemagazine@gmail.com with the subject line "Phirst Sentence Contest Questions."

ARTiculate Contest

We're all about inspiring you. And even more about you inspiring others.

ARTiculate is an art and writing contest. This two-part competition will take place consecutively and will have two winners, one for art and one for writing.

The first half of the ARTiculate contest is the ART portion.

The competition is open to artists anywhere in the world working in any art medium. There is no theme, restrictions, or subject for content. We want your piece to be powerful. We want you to reach deep within yourselves and pull out something that you find unique and beautiful--whether the beauty is found in a black-and-white photograph of a New York City skyscraper or a colorful pastel of a pregnant woman dancing.

We want you to tell a story without saying a word. Then, we want that piece of art to serve as a muse for an author to speak. We want you to get inspired to inspire someone else. A domino effect of creativity.

PRIZE:

  • Winner will receive $50
  • The winning piece shall serve as the homepage image on Phree Write Magazine until the winning creative writing story is selected.
  • Winner will have a Q&A interview with a featured page exhibiting up to 10 pieces of their collection
  • Winner will serve as one of the semi-finalist judges and determine five finalists for the second half of ARTiculate contest.

Guidelines & Judging:

Only two-dimensional, original artwork that is conceived and created by the entrant will be considered. The competition is open to any category including portrait, still life, photography, landscape, abstract/experimental, animal/wildlife, and others. Entries will be judged on expressiveness, draftsmanship, handling of medium, lighting, mood (in relation to photography and still life), creative use of form, and special techniques. This must be original work, meaning if it is a pastel of a photograph, the photograph must have been taken by the entrant.

But most importantly, entries will be judged on the ability to express a story through art. Your piece will be used as inspiration for a poet or writer. It might be difficult to write a story on your piece if it is an oil canvas of red triangles and black circles in the center. Therefore preference will be given to entrants who submit work where it is possible for a story or poem to be written to their piece.

Entry Procedures:

  • Please submit the art medium of each image with the artist name. Do not include titles of pieces.
  • Include a short bio (50-100 words).
  • Work should be submitted as a digital image in JPG format only.
  • The image resolution should be no lower than 150 dpi and no higher than 600 dpi.
  • The file size should not exceed 6MB.
  • Please do not submit more than fifteen pieces.

Entries that do not follow these guidelines and procedures will not be considered.

Entry fee: $10 for 3 pieces, $5 for additional pieces.

Contest Dates: TBA

Winner will be announced three weeks after submission deadline.

ARTiculate (Creative Writing)

The second part of the ARTiculate contest is the creative writing portion.

Let the art inspire you. Create a piece of writing in any category (fiction, flash fiction, micro fiction, micro micro fiction, poetry, doesn't matter) based off the winning art piece in the first half of ARTiculate. The art piece was the visual aspect, make your writing the mental and emotional. Have your story be the words the art can't get out by itself. Be the artwork's microphone. The writing piece should compliment the artwork and together the two should become one.

PRIZE:

  • Winner will receive $50
  • The winning writing piece will be linked to the homepage image (the winning art piece)
  • Winner will have a Q&A interview with a featured page including two additional original stories not exceeding 3000 words.
  • Winner will serve as one of the semi-finalist judges for next year's Creative Writing portion of the ARTiculate contest and determine five finalists.

Guidelines & Judging:

Only original and previously unpublished work will be considered. The contest is open to any category and writing style. Original meaning the piece was conceived and created by the entrant and previously unpublished meaning the work has not been published in print or online in any form including personal blogs and social networks. Entries will be judged on the writer's ability to capture a story from the art piece while managing to tell a story of their own. Entries will also be judged on creativity, diction, conciseness, and originality. Make your story wow us in every way.

Entry Procedures:

  • Your piece should not exceed 1000 words. (Your story is judged on conciseness so if you are able to create a powerful piece in fewer words, you might have a better chance in winning.)
  • Work should be submitted as .doc, .docx, or .rtf. Do not submit your piece as a PDF.
  • Include a short bio (50-100 words)
  • If you wish to add additional entries, add each into appropriate files (additional entry should go into File 2 , another entry into File 3, another entry into File 4 etc.)

Entries that do not follow these restrictions will not be considered.

Entry fee: $5 for 2 pieces, $3 for additional pieces

Contest Dates: TBA

Winner will be announced three weeks after submission deadline.
